Our Mission Statement

Loving our neighbors with glad and sincere hearts and praising God while making a difference and offering hope to all humanity.

Throughout the year, many local, state, national and international organizations benefit from the SUMC missions budget. To date in 2010, the following organizations have received funds from our church:

Sedona Food Bank
Verde Valley Sanctuary
Verde Valley Caregivers
Rainbow Acres
Desert Southwest Conference – United Methodist Outreach Ministries in Phoenix
Covenant Missionary Support – David Persons of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
National/Global – United Methodist Committee of Relief emergency relief funds.

As our missions fund receives money during the rest of the year, we will continue to keep you updated as to our contributions.

Support Our Troops Continues

Samantha Owen, great-niece of SUMC member Freda Wrons, is currently serving our country on a Navy ship. We want to show her our appreciation by sending her a gift package! On the table just outside the sanctuary is a list of useful and enjoyable items.

The U.S. postal service supplies free shipping cartons and a low, fixed rate. Therefore, heavier items such as magazines may be sent at this low cost. We have boxes and postage.

You continue to show your concern for our military by your generous donations. Recently we sent two gift boxes to Jared Brownlow, great-nephew of the Brownlows.

Please remember Samantha and all our troops. The Memorial Day observation is May 24 this year. If you have a friend or loved one who is serving overseas to whom you would like us to send a gift box, please contact the church office.

Warm Thank You from Alaska

Your generous donations to the special Christmas offering designated specifically for two children’s ministries: Alaska Children’s Services and a rural clothing ministry for Alaskan children brought this recently-received response.

Dear Sedona UMC Family,

I want to thank you for sending the great donation to help us purchase clothes to give to families here in Willow, Anvik, and Grayling, Alaska. We don’t get real dressy, but we do get cold.

Last month I took a 17-year-old girl who is living on her own to town to purchase winter boots. It was –40 degrees and she only had tennis shoes. We also found some warm sweaters. At the church were warm socks, gloves, and a hat. We keep many of those items on hand. It is not uncommon for someone to come to the food bank and they need gloves or a hat.

At Christmas when the 71 families came to get their food, new clothes and toys it is great to have tables filled with clothes so they can have a choice. One woman who came said food was good, but she had food stamps she could use for that. It was the new clothes that her five children needed. We are now shopping the sales to restock!

This summer when kids come to camp there are always one or two that don’t have tennis shoes that fit or are not full of holes.

So your assistance helps make our mission possible. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Fran Lynch, Deaconess & Church and Community Worker

United Methodist Special Sunday Offerings

The United Methodist General Conference years ago created six Special Sundays with offerings to help congregations work with communities, rebuild shattered lives, strengthen self-sufficiency, encourage partnerships, nurture Native American ministries, model peace and justice, provide scholarships and loans for United Methodist students, and much more. This year, SUMC will observe all six Sundays. In March we observed One Great Hour of Sharing which goes to UMCOR’s administrative costs, thus allowing 100% of all special emergency relief offerings to go toward the specific disaster relief.

The remaining five offerings are:

Native American Ministries Sunday: nurtures outreach with persons of all ages and provides scholarships for United Methodist Native American seminarians.

Peace with Justice Sunday: helps United Methodist worldwide work  with people to advocate for human rights, buy fair-trade products, care for the environment, demonstrate for a cause, eradicate poverty, feed hungry people, mediate conflict, provide health care, seek affordable housing and model nonviolence.

World Communion Sunday: provides scholarships for U.S. and international racial- and ethnic-minority students, on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

United Methodist Student Day: provides scholarships and loans for students attending United Methodist-related and other accredited colleges and universities.

Human Relations Day: This day is usually observed in January, but will be observed at a later date this year. The offering helps church-based community developers work in racial- and ethnic-minority communities in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Prayer Request for David and Lori Persons

Missionaries – Republic of the Congo David and Lori Persons, with whom SUMC has a convenant missionary support relationship have been experiencing unimaginable problems over the past year. Recently, armed bandits have come to their school and robbed, beaten and tortured a number of the teachers. The problem is made worse because the bandits come at night. For the past year, the area in which they live has been without electricity due to a broken transformer, which for several reasons has not been replaced or successfully repaired. They have gone through much red tape to get a new transformer and expect one in a few months. The local police chief has been replaced, and they now have more protection. There has been an outbreak of typhoid fever due to bad water, so they pump water twice a week with diesel fuel. Somehow, they keep teaching and, as they say, “answering the hundred needs at the door.” David and Lori thank everyone for your continuing prayers and support and ask: “Keep praying!”
